Chery Qq

The China-built Chery QQ scores big on cute appeal, but what lurks under its skin offers a different story

This is the first appearance in the local market from Chery Automobile, which was formed in 1997 as an auto manufacturer owned by the Wuhu province government in China, although is about to be privatised.
The pint-sized three cylinder 812cc Chery QQ has been in production since 2003 in China, along with a 1.1-litre version - the latter currently not available here.

The QQ has immediately cemented its reputation as the most affordable new car in Singapore with a price tag of $30,000. Its immediate competitors are the 1.0-litre Perodua Kelisa and the 1.1-litre Kia Picanto.

Only a five-speed manual Chery QQ is currently available, although an auto version is expected.

For its price the QQ is well equipped with one-touch power windows that close globally, power steering, power mirrors, rev counter, remote central locking, a CD and MP3 player, plus front and rear fog lights. But we wonder how well the QQ will fair after a year or so of daily driving? You can't ignore the lure of the opposition for just $3,000 more. Both the Kelisa and the Picanto offer a more planted small car driving experience and a good level of build quality for not an awful lot more. Cheapness is not always a virtue if the entire package is compromised. In the Chery QQ brochure there is, worryingly, a picture of a man standing in the pouring rain with the Chery sitting motionless behind him. We know how he feels. Perhaps QQ is an acronym for Questionable Quality.

Aluminum MultiTouch MacBook, New MacBook Pro, and More? [Fake]

A MacRumors reader ran across a very unusual .Mac web page yesterday and was kind enough to forward it on. The page contained promotional images for Apple products, including a couple that are not yet shipping products. Specifically, an aluminum MacBook with multitouch and an iMac-like MacBook Pro design were shown:

Typically, we might dismiss such images as some of the many speculative fan-made mockups floating around, but the web page also listed a valid "@apple.com" iTunes Store account and password. Due to the live account information listed, we are not linking directly to the site, but have provided some screenshots below.

The site also revealed a number of other details, including teasers for iTunes 8, a 32GB iPhone, and a WWDC launch date (June 10th). The amount of information included at this early date, especially on a publicly accessible site, makes it difficult to believe. However, the live @apple.com iTunes account is difficult to ignore.

Apple is set to open their new Boston Apple Store on Boylston Street on Thursday, May 15th at 6:00 pm. Apple will be giving away limited edition T-shirts and "other surprises" at the store opening.

Every Apple product is available for you to get to know and test-drive at the Apple Store. And the top floor is dedicated entirely to programs, support, and services. It's home to the Genius Bar, One-to-One personal training and free one-hour workshops to get the most out of your Apple products. Come early and be among the first to experience what the Apple Store is all about.

Later this month, Apple is opening its latest flagship store on Boylston Street in Boston. The store's main claim to fame? It's huge. We're talking largest Apple Store in the world country, by square footage. The store, in the city's historic Back Bay district, looks like a four-story glass cube. It's the first store inside Boston proper and the first with (finally) easy subway access. According to a store employee, it's a good thing Boylston Street is so big: Apple estimates 1,500-2000 customers/hour will visit — more than 10 times the 160/hour that the average store gets. It's something else inferiority-complex ravaged Bostonians can hold over New York. UPDATE May 13 2008: An Apple spokesperson has confirmed this is the largest store in the United States, besting the Fifth Avenue store in New York, but still smaller than Regent Street in London.
